Illustrations accompanying a letter describing Antoni van Leeuwenhoek's microscopical observations, dated 12 January 1680. An English extract of the letter was printed in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, 13 (1683), pp. 197-208. The figures show: fibres in a section of ebony cut crosswise (no. 6, fig. 1) and lengthwise (no. 6, figs. 2 and 3); fibres in a section of boxwood cut crosswise (no. 7, fig. 1) and lengthwise (no. 7, fig. 2); a section of straw cut crosswise (no. 8, fig. 1) and the exterior of the straw (no. 8, fig. 2).
