'Sturnus niger alis superne rubentibus', the red-winged starling, perched on a branch of the 'Myrtus brabanticae similis caroliniensis humilior', the broad-leaved candle-berry myrtle (Catesby's identifications; modern scientific names: Agelaius phoeniceus, the red-winged blackbird; Morella caroliniensis, the small evergreen bayberry). Plate 13 from volume I of The natural history of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands, by Mark Catesby (London, 1731). Mark Catesby was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1733.
