'Vesuvius erupting'
Study of an energetic eruption with plumes of gas and ash, heavier ejected material is shown falling to earth. An observation of volcanic activity at Mount Vesuvius near the Bay of Naples, Italy, kept by the artist on behalf of Sir William Hamilton. The sheet is pasted into volume 1 of Piaggio's notebooks for the period 1779-1781.
