Two snakes of North America

Zoological studies of two snakes from the south-western United States of America and Mexico, with six details. Figure 1 Coluber (Ophis) Californiae the California kingsnake, or Black desert kingsnake [modern taxonomy Lampropeltis californiae]. Figure 2 C.Vertebrale (C. vertebralis) the Cape gopher snake [modern taxonomy Pituophis vertebralis]. Figures 1 A-B and 2 A-B are details of the head of each reptile. Figure 3B is a detail of the head of C. tete-plate (C.planiceps) the Westren blackhead snake [modern taxonomy Tantilla planiceps]. Plate 27 from the monograph "Description de quelques espÞce de reptiles de la Californieà", by H M D de Blainville from Nouvelles Annales du Museum d'Histoire Naturelle, vol. 4 (1835). The plate is inscribed: "Nouv. Annales du Museum 1835. Pl: 27. PrÞtre pinxt. Impr: Lith. De Thierry Freres. Franke delt. 1. Coluber (Ophis) Californiae. 2. Coluber Vertebralia. 3. Coluber planiceps." Henri Marie Ducrotay de Blainville (1777-1850), French zoologist and anatomist, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1832.
