The 'red-bellied wood-pecker', the 'hairy wood-pecker' and the 'black oak'

'Picus ventre rubo', the red-bellied wood-pecker, and 'Picus medius quasi villosus', the hairy wood-pecker, perched on the trunk of 'Quercus (forte) marilandica', the black oak (Catesby's identifications; modern scientific names: Melanerpes carolinus, the red-bellied woodpecker; Picoides villosus, the hairy woodpecker; Quercus marilandica, the blackjack oak). Plate 19 from volume I of The natural history of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands, by Mark Catesby (London, 1731). Mark Catesby was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1733.
