Shells
Conchological study of an unknown mollusc.
Presented at a meeting of the Royal Society on 22 December 1743 and recorded in the Journal Book (JBO/19), “Mr Gautier who at the last meeting shew’d some print in colours now produced some very curious draughts of shells which were illuminated by the same art in their proper colours. For which he has the thanks.” The previous meeting records the first presentation of colour mezzotints, “Mons Gautier a disciple of the late Mons le Blon shew’d several prints in colours made by mixture from the impressions of three plates, for which he had the thanks.”
