Three quarter length studio portrait of W J Hooker seated on a chair with a fleur-de-lys pattern, facing a small table upon which he holds a book. A pair of spectacles hang from a chain at waist level. Arched gold surround, inscribed below in gold: "Photographed by MAULL & POLYBLANK, 55, Gracechurch Street and 187A Piccadilly, London." Signed below in ink "Wm. Jackson Hooker". Inscribed verso in pencil: "Sir Wm. Hooker F.R.S. &c, &c, &c, Celebrated Botanist, Author &c Kew". William Jackson Hooker was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1812.
