Full length studio portrait of William Cavendish standing with his left hand resting upon a chair back, a sheaf of papers in his right hand. Compton faces to the left as viewed, where there is a heavily carved bookcase with a parianware bust, books and a framed portrait. Printed below the image: "MAULL & POLYBLANK, LONDON. The reverse has various inscriptions. Printed: "MAULL & POLYBLANK, Photographers, 53 GRACECHURCH STREET, and 187a, PICCADILLY LONDON." William Cavendish was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1829.
