Portrait of Urban Hjarne (1641-1724)

Hjõrne is shown wearing a shoulder-length wig and a neck-cloth or cravat. Portrait frontispiece to Actorum chymicorum Holmiensium Parasceve, id est praeparatio ad tentamina in Regio Laboratorio Holmiensi peracta...by Urban Hierne (Stockholm, J.H.Werner, 1712). The plate is inscribed lower right "El. Brener amica manu pin et sculp." The oval frame has a heraldic badge at the lower edge and contains the inscription: "URBANUS HIAERNE S.R.M. SUECIAE ARCHIATER PRIM AET 71". The supporting plinth has a longer inscription, commencing: "Qui Suinas Sophiam veram, qui Chemica, Fontes, HIAERNIUS..." Urban Hjõrne was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1669.
