Half length studio portrait of Michael Faraday standing with his left hand resting upon a table, knuckles down, the right holding a bar magnet upright. Faraday wears a dark jacket, and decorated waistcoat with watch chain visible, over lighter-coloured trousers. Arched gold surround, inscribed below in gold: "Photographed by MAULL & POLYBLANK, 55, Gracechurch Street and 187a Piccadilly, London." Signed lower right in ink "M Faraday". Inscribed in pencil verso "Professor Faraday". From the Maull & Polyblank series Photographic Portraits of Living Celebrities, no.18 October 1857. Michael Faraday was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1824.
