Half length study of Appold, seated, facing the viewer's right and holding a book in his left hand. Embossed oval stamp below: "BRIGHTON TALBOTYPE GALLERY (HENNAH & KENT) BY LICENSE OF THE PATENTEE 108 KING'S ROAD BRIGHTON." In pencil lower left "J G Appold". . J G Appold was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1853.
