Full length studio portrait of John Bowring standing and turned to the right as viewed. Bowman wears spectacles and rests his left hand, which holds a roll of paper, on a chair back. A small clothed table can be seen behind with two books resting on it. Printed below the image: "MAULL & POLYBLANK, LONDON." The reverse has various inscriptions. Printed: "MAULL & POLYBLANK, Photographers, 55, GRACECHURCH STREET, and 187a, PICCADILLY LONDON." Sir John Bowring was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1856.
