Head and shoulders painting of Newton, from a sculpture at the Royal Society. Inscribed in ink "ISAACUS NEWTON. EQUES AURATUS. Anno Aetatis suae 79. Regae Societas PRAESES Anno Domni. 1721." Newton's coat of arms, bearing crossed bones, appears at the centre of this inscription. Signed lower left "G.P.Harding". Inscribed lower right in pencil: "facsimile copy of le Marchand's original in R.S.collection." Isaac Newton was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1672, he served as its President from 1703 to 1727.
