Full length seated studio portrait of F A Abel, looking to the right as viewed. Abel is presented at a table seated on a Gothic-revival chair. His left hand rests on an open book with other volumes bookended on the table. A wastepaper basket can be seen under the table and a small stool behind the sitter. Abel wears a dark suit and has prominent side-whiskers. Printed below the image: "MAULL & Co. LONDON". The reverse has various inscriptions including the photograph number, "No.34247". Printed: "Maull & Co. Photographers. 55, GRACECHURCH STREET, 187a, PICCADILLY, and TAVISTOCK HOUSE, FULHAM ROAD, LONDON." Sir Frederick Augustus Abel was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1860.
