Portrait of Francis Maitland Balfour (1851-1882)
Head and shoulders portrait of Balfour, turned to the left as viewed, wearing a jacket, waistcoat and cravat and shown with a moustache. Printed below the image: "FRANCIS R. ELWELL, M.A. 137 REGENT ST. LONDON. W.". The reverse is variously inscribed and printed with the same information as on the front mount and additionally an armorial badge with the motto "SPERO MELIORA" and information on ordering print copies. Francis Maitland Balfour was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1878.
