'Painted locust' [Yellow-winged locust]
Entomological study of the yellow-winged locust Gastrimargus musicus, an insect native to Australia. Plate 25 from The zoological miscellany; being a description of new, or interesting animals, by William Elford Leach, volume 1 (London, 1815). The author describes the insect within the text: "This beautiful Locust is a native of New Holland, where it appears to be not an uncommon insect." The plate is inscribed: "Drawn Engraved & Published by R. P. Nodder. Tavistock Street. 1814." William Elford Leach (1790-1836) British naturalist was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1816.
