Engraved plate showing illustrations accompanying a letter describing Antoni van Leeuwenhoek's microscopical observations, dated March 1682. The plate was printed with an English extract of the letter in Philosophical Collections ed. Robert Hooke (London, 1682) no. 5, pp. 152-160. The illustrations show: microscopic view of muscle fibres (figs. 1 and 2); micro-organisms (fig. 3); the muscle fibres of a cod (fig. 4); the nucleus in erythrocytes (red blood cells) of fishes (fig. 5); and a hypothesis about the growth of oyster shells (fig. 6).
