Scheme for a thermometer using temperature variations in an iron rod to move a dial on a clock-face temperature scale. The textual account notes that the melting points of metallic elements might be tried and marked upon the scale. From the manuscript copy of "A discourse concerning the usefulness of thermometers in chemical experiments...together with a description and uses of a new invented metalline thermometer", by Cromwell Mortimer. The drawing is initialled and dated below "CM delin. Apr. 10. 1735." Royal Society Register Book Original, vol.19 1734-1736, pp.161-184. The paper was read before the Royal Society on 8 May 1735.
