Davy lamp
Original model for a miners' safety lamp by Humphry Davy, the narrow cylindrical gauze is shown housed under a glass dome on an ebonized base. Davy created the lamp for use in coal mines, he discovered that a flame enclosed inside the fine mesh does not ignite firedamp (methane and other flammable gases) thus preventing explosions.
