'Cavia Capensis' [Cape hyrax]
Zoological study of the Cape hyrax Procavia capensis. The African animal, showing its prominent teeth, is seen by water, in an open landscape, with woodland and hills behind. An antelope also appears in the background. Plate 3 from the book Miscellanea zoologica, quibus novae imprimis atque obscurae animalium species describuntur et observationibus iconibusque illustrantur by P S Pallas (The Hague, 1766). An explanation to the plate appears in Latin: "Cavia capensis naturali positu. Ore quamvis clause, dente stamen inscsores duo superiors prominuli apparent, prout icone indicatum est." Inscribed above "Tab. III.", and below "A. Schouman del. S Fokke Sc."
Original: copperplate engraving. 1766
