Three figures of sunset effects caused by the eruption of the volcano on Krakatoa, the island in the Sunda Strait, Indonesia on 27 August 1883. These landscape scenes were observed and painted on 26 November 1883 at Chelsea, England. Figures 4-6, frontispiece plate from The eruption of Krakatoa, and subsequent phenomena. Report of the Krakatoa Committee of the Royal Society, edited by G.J.Symons (London, Trubner & Co., 1888). The plate is inscribed: 'TWILIGHT AND AFTERGLOW EFFECTS AT CHELSEA, LONDON. NOV. 26TH 1883.
