'Ateles paniscus' [Spider monkey]

Zoological study of a spider monkey of the genus Ateles. The red-faced spider monkey is now described as Atales paniscus although the subject of this illustration, described within the text as a young female, is of indeterminate type. The animal is native to South America and is shown hanging from a tree-branch using one forelimb and tail. A forest scene is visible behind. Plate 20 from The natural history of monkeys, by Sir William Jardine (Edinburgh, 1833) The Naturalist's Library. Mammalia. Vol.1. Referred to in the text as "The Coaita". The plate is inscribed: "PLATE 20. ATELES PANISCUS.
