'A face demonstrating veneration or reverence and a face showing fear and terror'

Illustration of a face showing reverence and a face showing fear or terror. Image 1- the upper lid of each eye is drawn up and the mouth partially opened creates an expression of veneration or reverence. The pupils are also turned upward. Image 2- The eye-brows are dragged upwards, and the eye-lids draw up and above the pupils and the lower jaw is pulled down to create an expression of terror. Plate 3 from Human Physiognomy Explain'd: In the Crounian Lectures on Muscular Motion by James Parsons FRS (London, C. Davis, 1746). Inscribed: 'Tab .III. p.53. I. Ps MD. del. J.Mynde sc.'
