Boyle's second air pump
Boyle's second air pump, constructed after he gave his first "great Engine" (used in the original New experiments ... Touching the spring of the air, 1660) to the Royal Society. This plate shows "the delineation of the entire engine ready to be set at work". A small mammal [possibly a rat] can be seen within the glass dome of the air pump. Plate 1 from A continuation of New experiments physico-mechanical, touching the spring and weight of the air, and their effects, Part 1, by Robert Boyle (Oxford, 1669).
