Apparatus to measure fluid expansion

Laboratory equipment intended to measure the expansion of fluids when heated. The apparatus consists of a retort resting upon a stand above a heat source, with a bulb thermometer to its right as viewed. A tube leads from the retort into a liquid-filled bell-jar with a body of gas (water or alcohol vapour) accumulating at the top. Plate 1 from the paper "Essai experimental et analytique sur les lois de la dilatabilite des fluides elastiques et sur celles de la force expansive de la vapeur de l'eau et de la vapeur de l'alkool, a differentes temperatures" [Experimental testing and analytical laws on the expansibility of elastic fluids and on the expansive force of water and alcohol vapours at different temperatures], by R.Prony [Gaspard Clair Franþois Marie Riche de Prony (1755-1839)], originally published in Journal de l'Ecole Polytechnique, vol.1, 1794. The plate is headed: "Description de l'appareil employe pour mesurer la dilatation des fluides elastiques" [Description of the apparatus employed to measure the expansion of elastic fluids] and is inscribed below "Floreal et Prairial An.3e. Memoire de Prony page 36 Grave par Delettre."
