Section through a tent observatory used for pendulum observations, indicating the location of main instruments (clock, pendulum, telescope and transit instrument) and the masonry pillar for mounting the pendulum clock. This is accompanied by a plan view of the pillar. Inscribed: 'Canvas Observatory' and 'Plan of the Wall'. Figure no.2 from Report of the length of the pendulum at the equator...made on an expedition...from the observatory at Madras..., by John Goldingham (Madras, 1824). Scale 1 inch: 2 feet. Original painting pasted onto a backing sheet. Not signed. Paper watermarked: 'C.Wilmot 1817'. John Goldingham (c.1766-1849) British astronomer was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1808.
