'Effects of jaundice on the brain and its membranes'
Illustration of the brain showing the effects of jaundice. Fig.1. The main image- the upper part of the brain is illustrated. The dura mater has been left on the brain to demonstrate the jaundiced appearance of the surface. It has been drawn back partially so as to see the colour of the membrane internally, showing small white areas of cartilaginous deposit. The brain is from a woman 70 years of age, who died of jaundice after suffering with it for four months. Fig.2. Bottom left image. A portion of the cerebrum covered by the arachnoid and pia mater. Fig.3. Bottom right image. A cut portion of the brain, showing the serum separated from the blood in the vessels to be tinged with bile. Figs 2&3 were taken from the brain of a 28 year old who suffered, and eventually died from, acute jaundice after 18 days.
