The expedition party reaches the open sea on 20 July 1821, before sailing east in three canoes to chart the unknown coastline. John Franklin's expedition of 1819-22 travelled via the Coppermine River to map the Canadian Arctic coast, as part of efforts to find the fabled North-West Passage.
