Unable to return by sea to the mouth of the Coppermine River in August 1821, the expedition party tried to return to Fort Enterprise by land - a gruelling journey during which Lieutenant Robert Hood, who drew the picture from which this engraving was produced, was shot dead by a Canadian guide. John Franklin's expedition of 1819-22 travelled via the Coppermine River to map the Canadian Arctic coast, as part of efforts to find the fabled North-West Passage.
