'Silex arenacea'
Fossil shells in sandstone, here termed 'calcereous sandstone'. Plate 15 from British mineralogy: or coloured figures intended to elucidate the mineralogy of Great Britain, by James Sowerby, volume 1 (London, R.Taylor & Co., 1804). The accompanying text states that "Masses of this...were found at near twelve feet deep in a lightly gravel stratum, in cutting the canal at the Isle of Dogs..." The plate is inscribed: "Feb. 1 1803. Published by Jas. Sowerby, London."
