Three quarter length studio portrait of Sir Charles Lyell, seated, holding a book in his left hand. A table is visible behind, covered by a decorative cloth. Lyell is wearing a dark jacket over an embroidered [?] waistcoat and pinstripe trousers. Arched print, with an oval embossed stamp below: "MAULL & POLYBLANK, 187A PICCADILLY, LONDON." Signed below in ink: "Cha. Lyell". Inscribed verso in ink: "Sir Chas Lyell 7161a". Sir Charles Lyell was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1826.
