Half length portrait of Sir Archibald Geikie, seated in a wooden armchair, dressed in a dark suit, white shirt and maroon tie with a gold stick-pin. A watch chain is visible at the sitter's waist. Geikie has long white side-whiskers and holds metal-rimmed spectacles in his right hand, the left resting on his thigh. Behind, a fossilised bone is visible at the sitter's right shoulder with others painted more obscurely to the right as viewed. Archibald Geikie was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1865, he served as its President from 1908 to 1913.
