Three quarter length portrait of Adam Sedgwick, seated on a wooden gothic revival style chair with his hands clasped. To his right is a clothed table upon which rest three books. Contemporary ink inscription: "Oct. 3 1862 A Sedgwick". Bearing an embossed stamp "HILLS PHOTOGRAPHERS OXFORD". Monogram initial verso. Adam Sedgwick was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1821.
