'Calx carbonata'
Specimen of calcium carbonate crystal, here termed 'crystallized carbonate of lime', showing optical effects. Plate 35 from British mineralogy: or coloured figures intended to elucidate the mineralogy of Great Britain, by James Sowerby, volume 1 (London, R.Taylor & Co., 1804). The accompanying text states that "This fine yellowish crystal shows at the apex three polished faces...the double refraction is seen, when held in certain directions, by the prismatic tints, which are very beautiful..." The plate is inscribed: "Augt. 1 1803. Published by Jas. Sowerby, London."
