Inscribed below: "Engraved by G.F. Storm from an unfinished painting in the possession of the family û the last work of Stuart. Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1838 by H.I.Bowditch in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of Massachusetts." With a facsimile signature. Nathaniel Bowditch (1773-1838) American mathematician was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1818.
