Portrait of John William Strutt. 3rd Baron Rayleigh (1842-1919)
A three-quarter length portrait of Rayleigh, landscape format, seated in a green leather library chair. Rayleigh is in a relaxed pose, his left arm resting on the chair back, the right hand holding his knee, his legs crossed. He wears a black suit and tie, a white shirt with a single gold stud. Behind is a table upon which is a scatter of papers and bound books. Rayleigh was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1873, he served as its President from 1905 to 1908.
