Portrait of John Hunter (1728-1793)
Half length portrait of Hunter, seated at a writing table holding a quill in his right hand, poised over a book, with inkwells on the table. His left hand rests on his knee. Hunter is shown wearing a loose single breasted coat with a single button. Behind is a large sculpture bust and a statue or casket in the form of a woman, possibly intended as an Egyptian mummy case. The print is heavily cropped. The remains of an inscription are visible, "Home H Cook [e]?". Inscribed in ink: "John Hunter FRS" and in pencil lower left "e.1767". John Hunter was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1767.
