Half length portrait of John Evans, seated. Evans is bearded and wears gold-rimmed spectacles. He is shown wearing a black jacket and waistcoat, at which a gold watch-chain is visible. He has a white shirt with a blue bow tie. Evans holds an archaeological artefact, apparently a head, possibly carved in ivory or bone. Sir John Evans was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1864. He served as Vice-President and Treasurer of the Royal Society.
