Portrait of John Bowring (1792-1872)
Half length seated studio portrait of John Bowring, looking to camera, the carved back of a chair visible behind, with a curtain or drape above. Bowring wears spectacles. A sheaf of papers is visible in his inside coat pocket and he holds a pencil or pen in his right hand, the top of which is visible at the lower edge of the picture. Printed below the image: "WILSON & BEADELL, 69, NEW BOND STREET, Photographers to the Queen." Information repeated verso, with later pencil inscriptions. Sir John Bowring was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1856.
