Three quarter length seated studio portrait of John Bowring, half turned to the right as viewed. Bowring wears spectacles and holds a book in his right hand, the index finger marking a place. Printed verso: "PHOTOGRAPHED by H.J.Whitlock 11, NEW STREET BIRMINGHAM" with a monogrammed and crowned badge. Sir John Bowring was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1856.
