Portrait of James Holman (1786-1857)

Half length portrait of James Holman posed with a writing block and stylus. Behind the sitter is a painting of a naval scene with a terrestrial globe, in reference to Holman's career as a lieutenant in the Royal Navy and, later, as a travel writer. Inscribed below: 'Wageman del. E.Finden sc. JAMES HOLMAN, R.N., F.R.S. "Total eclipse! Nor Sun, nor Moon;/All dark amidst the blaze of noon." Published by Smith, Elder & Co. Cornhill.' Frontispiece to A voyage round the world, including travels in Africa, Asia, Australasia, America, by James Holman, vol.1 (London, 1834).. James Holman, known to his contemporaries as 'The Blind Traveller', was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1826.

Original: line and stipple engraving. ca. 1834
