Portrait of Isaac Newton (1642-1727)

Head and shoulder portrait of Newton wearing a dark coat and waistcoat, with a white neck-cloth. Inscribed below the image "SIR ISAAC NEWTON DRAWN AND SCRAPED MDCCLX BY JAMES MACARDEL FROM AN ORIGINAL PORTRAIT PAINTED BY ENOCH SEEMAN NOW IN THE POSSESSION OF THOMAS HOLLIS F.R. AND A.S.S." There follows an extended quotation from Voltaire commencing: "LES ITALIENS CES PEUPLES..." Isaac Newton was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1672, he served as its President from 1703 to 1727.
