‘Prince Bisignani’s tree pink’
Botanical study of Dianthus rupicola, here referred to as Prince Bisignano’s tree pink Dianthus bisignani. The plant is native to areas of southern Europe and northern Africa. The plate shows flowers and leaves.
Plate 29 from Edwards’s botanical register…edited by John Lindley, new series v.1, (London, James Ridgway and Sons, 1838). The plate is inscribed ‘29’ above; and below ‘Miss Drake del. Pub by J. Ridgway, 169 Piccadilly June 1. 1838. S. Watts sc.’
In the associated text, the author states that this is: ‘A beautiful half-hardy shrubby pink, communicated in September last, from the garden at Abbotsbury, by the Hon. W.F. Strangways, to whom I am indebted…This Dianthus is a native of the coasts of Calabria and Sicily.’"
