‘Blood-coloured cryptochilus’
Botanical study of the orchid here described as the Blood-coloured Cryptochilus Cryptochilus sanguinea. The plant is native to Nepal and China. The plate shows flowers, leaves and pseudobulbs, with three details of petals, anthers and pollen masses.
Plate 23 from Edwards’s botanical register…edited by John Lindley, new series v.1, (London, James Ridgway and Sons, 1838). The plate is inscribed ‘23’ above; and below ‘Miss Drake del. Pub by J. Ridgway, 169 Piccadilly May 1 1838. S. Watts sc.’
In the associated text, the author states that: ‘It is a native of rocks in the northern provinces of India. Dr Wallich found it only once, and then on a single spot on stones…The drawing was made in June 1837, in the collection of Messrs. Loddiges.’"
