Full length studio portrait of the Reverend James Challis standing in academic robes, his right hand on the spine of a book which rests upon a table. Behind is a curtain or drape with a chair to the right of picture. Printed below the image: "MAULL & POLYBLANK, LONDON. The reverse has various inscriptions. Printed: "MAULL & POLYBLANK, Photographers, 55 GRACECHURCH STREET, and 187a, PICCADILLY LONDON." James Challis was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1848.
