'The Balanus of the Whale with Polypes, the Limax Marina, the Hairy Crab, and the Herringbone Coralline

Marine zoological studies, figures A-F. Figures A-C show a barnacle with 'polypes' adhering to it and sections of both. Figure D is the shell of 'Limax marina', a marine mollusc. Figure E is the 'Hairy Crab', possibly the Shaggy Sponge Crab Dromidia hirsutissima [from the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa] shown with the thorax extended. Figure F is the 'Herringbone coralline', apparently a variety of sea-fan [from the Island of St Helena]. Plate 286 from chapter 76 of Gleanings of natural history, exhibiting figures of quadrupeds, birds, insects, plants, &c..., by George Edwards, volume 2 (London, for the author, 1760). The author describes the figures within the text. The plate is not inscribed.

Original: etching. 1757-1758
