Zoological study of a three-striped night monkey Aotus trivirgatus, a specimen of owl monkey from South America. Shown in profile on the ground and slumped as if asleep. With a background scene of forest and mountains. Plate 24 from The natural history of monkeys, by Sir William Jardine (Edinburgh, 1833) The Naturalist's Library. Mammalia. Vol.1. This new world monkey was first described by Alexander von Humboldt, whose 1811 work is referred to here by William Jardine. Referred to in the text as "The Douroucouli". The plate is inscribed: "PLATE 24. AOTES TRIVIGATUS. Lizars sc."
