Shelton regulator in canvas observatory

A Shelton compound pendulum regulator carried on the second of James Cook's three voyages around the world for use in astronomical observations. The clock is shown within a portable canvas observatory designed by astronomer William Bayly (1737û1810). Illustration from The original astronomical observations made in the course of a voyage towards the South Pole and round the world, in ... the 'Resolution' and 'Adventure', in the years 1772, 1773, 1774, and 1775, by William Wales and William Bayly (London, 1777).
