In the summer of 1820, the party journeyed from Fort Chipewyan to the Great Slave Lake, where they came under the protection of Akaitcho (Big-foot), the local Yellowknife chief. John Franklin's expedition of 1819-22 travelled via the Coppermine River to map the Canadian Arctic coast, as part of efforts to find the fabled North-West Passage. Illustration from Narrative of a journey to the shores of the Polar Sea, by John Franklin (London, 1823).
