A side party led by Lieutenant Robert Hood (1797-1821) spent time observing the customs of the local Cree Indians. John Franklin's expedition of 1819-22 travelled via the Coppermine River to map the Canadian Arctic coast, as part of efforts to find the fabled North-West Passage. Illustration from Narrative of a journey to the shores of the Polar Sea, by John Franklin (London, 1823).
